Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), also called licence plate recognition (LPR), uses a camera and software to read a vehicle’s plate in a fraction of a second. It can open a gate for a registered car, start a parking session, flag a vehicle on a watch list or link a truck to its delivery. Expedite IoT supplies, installs and maintains ANPR cameras for car parks, compounds, industrial sites, fuel stations and government facilities across Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman, and connects them to TekAccess so vehicles and people are controlled from one access control system.
How ANPR works
- Capture: a camera takes an image of the vehicle as it approaches, using infrared light at night.
- Locate: software finds the plate in the image.
- Read: optical character recognition reads the letters and numbers.
- Match: the plate is checked against your lists of allowed, expected or blocked vehicles.
- Act: the barrier opens, an alert is raised or a record is created.
Reading Gulf plates
Saudi plates combine Arabic and Latin letters and numbers. Qatari, Omani, Kuwaiti, Bahraini and Emirati plates each have their own layouts. Our ANPR software reads both scripts and stores the plate in the format your team uses.
Where ANPR is used
Access control at gates
Registered staff and resident vehicles enter without stopping. Visitors can be pre-registered through our visitor management system. See gate barrier systems.
Car parks
Ticketless entry and exit, permit checks and occupancy counts.
Industrial sites and weighbridges
Truck plates are linked to deliveries and weighbridge records, removing manual data entry at the gatehouse.
Fuel stations
Vehicles can be identified for fleet fuelling, loyalty programmes or drive-off alerts.
Security and watch lists
Vehicles of concern trigger alerts at the gate or in the control room.
Traffic studies
Plate matching between points measures journey times and routes. See traffic data collection.
Getting good read rates
- Angle: the camera should see the plate straight on, or close to it.
- Distance and zoom: matched to where vehicles slow down.
- Infrared: for night reads and headlight glare.
- Shutter speed: matched to vehicle speed.
- Sun: low morning and evening sun is a common problem in the region. Positioning and settings deal with it.
- Cleanliness: dust on the lens reduces accuracy, so cleaning is part of maintenance.
We test read rates on your lanes before handover.
What the system includes
- ANPR cameras with built-in infrared
- Recognition software on the camera or on a server
- Network video recorder for evidence
- Lists for allowed, visitor and blocked vehicles with schedules
- Integration with barriers, TekAccess and parking or weighbridge systems
- Search and reports by plate, date and lane
Privacy
Plate records linked to people are personal data. Keep them only as long as needed, limit who can search them and display signs where cameras are used. Retention can be set per site.
Choosing ANPR cameras
| Requirement | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Slow traffic at a gate | Standard ANPR camera with infrared, short range |
| Faster traffic on a road | Higher shutter speed and longer focal length |
| Wide entrances or two lanes | One camera per lane for reliability |
| Night operation | Built-in infrared illumination |
| Harsh sun | Positioning to avoid direct sun into the lens, plus wide dynamic range |
| Trucks with trailers | Second camera for the trailer plate |
Example scenario: a residential compound
A compound on the edge of Riyadh has two gates and a guard team that checks every car by hand. Residents complain about queues at school-run time, and guards cannot keep track of which visitors are still inside. With ANPR on the resident lanes, registered cars enter without stopping. Guests are pre-registered by residents in the community app, so their plates are expected. Guards now deal only with exceptions, and the gate log shows every vehicle that entered and left.
Example scenario: a fuel station network
A fuel retailer wants to identify fleet vehicles automatically and flag vehicles that have driven off without paying before. ANPR cameras at each forecourt read plates as vehicles arrive. Fleet vehicles are linked to their account, and plates on the drive-off list trigger an alert to the cashier before fuel is dispensed.
Maintenance
ANPR cameras need clean lenses, correct focus and up-to-date software to keep read rates high, especially after sandstorms. Our annual maintenance plans include cleaning, adjustment, firmware updates and read-rate reports.
Integration options
- Barrier controllers for automatic gate opening
- TekAccess for combined vehicle and pedestrian permissions
- Parking management and payment systems
- Weighbridge and logistics software
- Video management systems for evidence
Parking management with ANPR
ANPR changes how car parks run. Instead of paper tickets and pay machines, the camera reads the plate on entry and starts a session. Drivers pay by plate at a kiosk or online, and the exit barrier opens when the plate is read again. Permit holders and pre-registered visitors simply drive in and out. Operators get accurate occupancy, dwell time and revenue reports, and lost tickets disappear.
Questions to ask an ANPR supplier
- Does the software read Arabic and Latin characters on Saudi plates?
- What read rate can you show on a lane like ours?
- How does the camera cope with low sun and headlight glare?
- Can it connect to our barriers, access control and parking system?
- Who maintains the cameras locally?
ANPR at industrial gates and weighbridges
At factories, quarries, ports and distribution centers, gatehouse staff often type truck plates into several systems: the gate log, the weighbridge software and the warehouse system. Each step adds delay and errors. With ANPR, the plate is captured once at the gate and passed automatically to every system that needs it. Expected deliveries are matched to their booking, the weighbridge records the weight against the right truck, and the gate log shows how long each vehicle spent on site. Gate staff only handle exceptions, such as unexpected vehicles or unreadable plates.
Supply, installation and support
Expedite IoT supplies ANPR cameras, recorders and software, installs them at the right height and angle for each lane, connects them to barriers and back-office systems, and trains your team. After handover, our Riyadh team provides annual maintenance, including cleaning, focus checks, firmware updates and read-rate reports, so performance does not slowly decline over time.

Components of an LPR & ANPR System
- Cameras: High-resolution cameras (either still or video) to capture images of license plates. Infrared cameras may be used for night-time or low-light conditions.
- Illumination: Often used to ensure clarity, especially in varying lighting conditions.
- Image Pre-processing: Enhances image quality by reducing noise, adjusting contrast, and handling various lighting conditions.
- Plate Localization: Identifies the region of interest where the license plate is located in the image.
- Character Segmentation: Isolates individual characters from the license plate.
- Character Recognition: Uses OCR to identify the alphanumeric characters on the plate.
- Recognition Software: Algorithms that process the image and recognize the license plate.
- Database Management System: Stores captured data and integrates with external databases (e.g., law enforcement databases).
- User Interface: Allows operators to view and manage recognized plates, often with alerting and reporting functionalities.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ANPR and LPR?
They are two names for the same technology: automatic number plate recognition and licence plate recognition.
Can ANPR read Saudi plates?
Yes. Our software reads Saudi plates in Arabic and Latin characters, as well as other GCC formats.
Does ANPR work at night?
Yes. Cameras use infrared light to read plates in darkness and through headlight glare.
Can ANPR open our existing barriers?
Usually yes, through a relay or network connection to the barrier controller.
Do you offer maintenance for ANPR cameras?
Yes. Annual maintenance includes cleaning, checks, firmware updates and read-rate tests.
How accurate are ANPR cameras?
With correct positioning, lighting and maintenance, read rates are high. We measure them on your lanes before handover.
